What’s New for Android and iOS Developers in BlackBerry UEM 12.6

blackberry-development-platform-homepage

With the recent release of BlackBerry Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) version 12.6 (formerly BES), developers have even more tools at their disposal now to write secure, connected and controlled applications for enterprise. This release aims at unifying the various BlackBerry software solutions that have been acquired or engineered under a single, amalgamated, all-encompassing platform.

With that, we have BlackBerry Unified Endpoint Management.

To coincide with the launch of UEM 12.6, we’ve even relaunched our BlackBerry enterprise developer website to highlight the opportunities developers have to interact and leverage the BlackBerry Development Platform.

The BlackBerry Dynamics SDK (formerly Good Dynamics) remains the foremost means for mobile app developers to secure communications/data, and deploy at scale to enterprise end-users via BlackBerry UEM. Rather than spending valuable time learning how to secure, deploy and manages these apps at a low-level, the Dynamics SDK allows developers to focus on building their commercial/business apps, by allowing the SDK framework to do the heavy lifting instead.

panther-icon-blackberry-lock-overlayThere is one interesting note for Android and iOS developers who have been using the Dynamics SDK and posting their apps to the BlackBerry MarketPlace for Enterprise Software; there are now updated overlay files/actionscripts to reflect the new BlackBerry lock overlay for your app’s icon. Existing apps in the market won’t need to be updated to reflect the new icon overlay (yet), however new submissions will require the updated iconography. Fortunately, the process is the same, and an updated video and template files are provided to make this as simple as possible.

Android developers, and particularly administrators, will be happy to learn that a Google domain is no longer required for Android for Work deployments in BlackBerry UEM 12.6. Troubleshooting remote application issues has also been greatly simplified, with the ability to retrieve Android device logs over BlackBerry UEM, by sending a Get device logs command.

When it comes to iOS, developers targeting iOS 9.3.2+ now have the ability to have their apps whitelisted (or blacklisted) within a compliance profile. As well, the capability to have their apps configured for their end-users according to the AppConfig schema is now being supported. BlackBerry UEM supports default and custom variables. Default variables represent standard account attributes (for example, username) and other predefined attributes (for example, server address used for device activation). Custom variables can be  created for other additional attributes.

merry-christmas-1920x640

Tis the season! Christmas is here, deck the halls and cook your Turkey! For me Christmas means relaxing with family and eating more food than I probably should. But for each individual person Christmas means something different, and something special.

This year I’ve decided to share with you unique Christmas celebrations from around the world. For example, did you know that in Argentina it is tradition to light “globos” (paper decorations similar to Chinese lanterns) on Christmas eve and release them into the sky? The Christmas Eve night sky in Argentina is full of beautifully lit paper decorations.

In the Netherlands the most important day of the holiday season is December 5th because that’s when Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) delivers  his gifts. In Colombia Christmas celebrations and preparations start on the evening of December 7th, which is known as ‘Día de las Velitas’ or ‘Day of the little Candles’. Houses and streets are decorated with candles, lanterns and thousands of lights. There are also big firework displays and music playing all night.

It seems like no matter where you are in the world this time of year is full of smiles and fun times! Get yourself in that fun loving Christmas mood by checking out some of these amazing Christmas apps and games available on BlackBerry World.

Developer Hero Q&A: The Five Minds Behind Five Fingers

Our Developer Hero Program, announced last June, saw hundreds of new applications submitted to the BlackBerry 10 store. From our fantastic development community, we chose four winners. Today, we’re interviewing the last of those four –the five developers at Five Fingers, the Vietnam-based studio responsible for Demon Warrior.

Here’s what they had to say:

How long have you been developing apps on the BlackBerry 10 platform?

We only started working with BlackBerry fairly recently. Back when the Developer Hero Program was announced a few months ago, we decided to participate. Even though we’re new to the platform, we can already see many advantages to it, especially when working on BlackBerry Passport devices.

Are there any features that stand out about our OS?

We’re very excited about the productivity features of your devices, and we especially love the Form Factor of the BlackBerry Passport.

What BlackBerry devices does your team currently use?

We own several Passports and Z10s.

What kind of support have you received from BlackBerry?

The Developer Hero Program was a fantastic way to get started in BlackBerry 10 development. It helped us bring our products to a wide range of BlackBerry users, and showed us some of the great things that could be accomplished on the platform. The BlackBerry Developer Forum and the documentation on BlackBerry’s website were also excellent, and the BlackBerry support team is really amazing.

Tell us about Demon Warrior. What inspired you to create it, and what features would you like to highlight?

demon-warrior-featureIt was a collaborative effort. We first conceived of a really dark, threatening character, with an emphasis on animation. We decided we wanted more, though, and created clothing, weapons, jewels, pets, wings, and more. Eventually, it evolved into a very attractive game – we’re very happy with where it’s at right now.

What kind of momentum have you seen with Demon Warrior?

The number of downloads has been amazing, as has the level of appreciation users have shown for our work. We were surprised and pleased with the willingness of users to pay for items in the in-game shop, as well.

What other apps have you developed for BB10? Are there any you’d like to mention, or anything you’ve got in the works right now?

We haven’t released any games yet, but we’re eventually planning to bring all our games to BlackBerry 10. We hope BlackBerry users love them as much as they loved Demon Warrior.

What’s the greatest moment you’ve had with BlackBerry?

When we found out we were one of the winners of the Developer Hero Program.

Meet Our Next Developer Hero – Q&A with Khoa Nguyen, Founder of Big Studio

When we announced our Developer Hero Program in June, we saw a fantastic outpouring of support from our BlackBerry 10 development community. Over the span of a little over a month, we saw hundreds of new applications submitted. From those, we chose four winners – today, we sit down for an interview with another of the developers behind one of the winning apps.

big-studio-khoa-nguyenSoftware engineer Khoa Nguyen has more than a decade of development experience.  He founded Big Studio with his long-time friend, Anh Do. Together, they’ve built a strong team, with a ton of great apps – including Monkey Adventure, a fun action game developer exclusively for BlackBerry 10.

Here’s what Khoa had to say.

How long have you been developing apps on the BlackBerry 10 platform?

I started on the BlackBerry 10 platform around six years ago, when I founded Big Studio.

What attracted you to the platform?

Mostly the security and productivity of BlackBerry’s devices. They have an excellent reputation for reliability, and for keeping both personal and business data safe.

Are there any features that stand out about our OS?

If I had to choose, I’d say the BlackBerry Hub – I find it incredibly impressive. It lets me consolidate everything from emails, text messages, and calls in a single location. That’s incredibly easy and convenient, and makes it much easier to organize my day.

Do you currently use a BlackBerry device?

Yes – a BlackBerry Passport. I have to deal with hundreds of emails a day, and the Passport is perfect for that.

What kind of support have you received from BlackBerry?

A ton. BlackBerry’s developer programs have been very helpful, and I’ve received a number of Alpha Dev devices on which I can test and deploy applications.

How did you first get into app development?

I began reading up on documentation back when Cascades was first unveiled. From there, I wrote a number of applications running on BlackBerry 10 simulators, and then Dev Alpha devices a few months later.

Tell us about Monkey Adventure. What inspired you to create it, and what features would you like to highlight?

monkey-adventureI wanted to build a fun running game with beautiful graphics, funny characters, and challenging gameplay. I also wanted to make sure players never really got bored – that’s why the game has over 120 levels. As for how I chose the main character…I just really love monkeys.

What kind of momentum have you seen with monkey Adventure?

The game reached 100,000 downloads after only two months of release, and all the user feedback I’ve seen so far has been very positive.

What other apps have you developed for BB10? Are there any you’d like to mention, or anything you’ve got in the works right now?

I’ve developed more than fifty applications on Blackberry 10, but I particularly love these ones:

I mainly develop apps in fitness, healthcare, and entertainment. Together, the apps above have reached over three million cumulative downloads. I’m really proud of them.

What’s the greatest moment you’ve had with BlackBerry?

While I’ve had many great moments, I must say my best was receiving my first Alpha Dev device from BlackBerry. It helped me to quickly test and deploy applications in a shorter time than I could manage using a simulator application on desktop.

About Khoa Nguyen, Big Studio Founder:  A husband and father, Khoa was born and raised in Vietnam. He graduated from the Hanoi University of Technology in 2006, and founded Big Studio in 2010, after working several corporate positions. Connect with Khoa on Facebook, LinkedIn or via Email.
